• The Hathaway Scholarship

Hathaway scholarships are designed to provide an incentive for Wyoming students to prepare for and pursue post-secondary education within the state of Wyoming. The program consists of four separate merit scholarships, each with specific eligibility requirements, and a need-based scholarship for eligible students that supplements the merit awards.

The Hathaway Scholarship was established to help Wyoming’s students prepare for and pursue their post-secondary education in the state. The scholarship has its roots in Governor Stanley Hathaway’s 1974 decision to create the state of Wyoming Permanent Mineral Trust Fund. The fund’s income would support state government operations – including higher education in Wyoming.

In 2005, state lawmakers created a scholarship fund with a $400 million permanent endowment, whose income funds scholarships for qualified Wyoming high school graduates to attend the University of Wyoming or any of the state’s seven community colleges.

• GEAR UP Wyoming 

The GEAR UP Wyoming (GUWY) state grant uses the priority student model for serving a minimum of 2,000 students each year from schools located across the state of Wyoming. Its strategic plan is focused on creating and utilizing statewide initiatives to foster systemic and long-term sustainable improvement in teaching to and learning of low-income, at-risk Wyoming students.

Federal dollars were placed into a trust fund to provide former GEAR UP Wyoming students, served under the 2005-2011 grant, scholarships to attend the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college. The Federal Scholarship criteria include specific requirements and are awarded to students who have demonstrated regular participation in the high school GEAR UP program prior to November 2011. From 2016 onward, there are very few students that are likely to meet all the eligibility requirements for the federal scholarship.

GEAR UP Wyoming also helps students apply for the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship. Daniels Fund Scholarships are awarded in the spring to graduating high school seniors and are supplemental after other federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid and scholarships. Students may use their scholarship at any two- or four-year accredited, nonprofit college or university in the United States with an intention to complete a bachelor’s degree.

• The Daniels Scholarship Program

The Daniels Scholarship Program offers resources, encouragement, and inspiration far beyond the financial assistance needed to earn a college degree. The Daniels Scholarship pays toward the costs of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and miscellaneous educational expenses. It is a “last dollar” scholarship, and therefore secondary to all other grants and scholarships awarded to the scholar.

After considering the student’s other scholarships, financial aid (federal, state, and institutional), and any work-study they accept, as well as their Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the Daniels Fund will pay toward the remaining costs of the scholar’s education. The amount of the scholarship is unique to each Daniels Scholar, and can vary from year to year.

Daniels Scholars may attend any two or four-year, nonprofit accredited college or university in the United States. Scholars must intend to complete a bachelor’s degree. If a scholar starts at a two-year college, they must be on a path to earn a bachelor’s degree. Daniels Scholarships may not be used at technical or trade schools, or for participation in certificate programs.

Elegibility requirements:

• Demonstrate financial need: financial need assesed by evaluating a number of factors such as the income and assets of the applicant’s parents, the income and assets of the applicant, and individual circumstances.
• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
• Be a resident of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming
• Be a high school senior graduating from a school in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming
• Earn ACT scores of at least 17 in each category (Math, English, Reading, Science); or an SAT Math score of at least 470 and an Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score of at least 450.
• Maintain minimum academic requirements (2.0 GPA) while in college and be on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree within four academic years
• Live on campus during freshman year
• Work in a paid position during the academic year (5 hours per week the first year in college and 10 hours per week every year after)
• Complete the Daniels Scholarship Enrichment Program, a series of online workshops led by local and national experts on topics including ethics, character, patriotism, civics, free enterprise, entrepreneurship, leadership, critical thinking, and etiquette
• Honor and live by the Daniels Scholar Code of Conduct
• Provide regular updates to and maintain communication with Daniels Fund staff
• Meet deadlines to complete scholarship requirements and renewal documents
• Attend our summer scholarship orientation conference in Denver
