• Student Scholarships in Ohio

A. Grace Lee Mims Vocal Scholarship:
This scholarship is aimed at African-American vocal students who are U.S. citizens and pursuing graduate-level study in vocal performance or music education, with an emphasis on voice. Candidates must be committed to preserving the art form of Negro spiritual singing as exemplified by Roland Hayes, Paul Robeson, Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Kathleen Battle, and others. The primary purpose of this award is to perpetuate the singing of the Negro spiritual through performance and/or teaching, so that this art form, created by African-American slaves in the Diaspora, will remain alive.

Eligibility requirements :

• Enrolled full time at a recognized and accredited institution (conservatory, college, university, etc.) for graduate-level course work toward a master’s or doctoral degree in vocal performance or music education, with an emphasis on voice, in order to perpetuate the singing of the Negro spiritual through performance and/or teaching
• Three letters of recommendation from voice teachers or music professors attesting to the applicant’s musical talent, moral character, and dedication to the survival of the Negro spiritual
• An audio tape or CD of a recent performance (concert or recital) and photo
• Three music programs reflecting at least a two-year span and including the applicant’s performance of Negro spirituals
• A personal statement describing your commitment to ensure the preservation of the Negro spiritual through your performance or teaching career
• A detailed budget for your academic year’s educational expenses including scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans
• A photograph of yourself
  In the selection process for this scholarship a panel of judges comprising persons associated with the purpose of the fund will choose scholarship finalists.

The scholarship award amount for the academic year is a maximum of $10,000. Awards must be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for the course. Formal notification of scholarship award will be made by the Cleveland Foundation to the selected recipient(s).

Continuence for the scholarship is based on the following:

• Maintain full-time enrollment status
• Email a grade report to the Scholarship team for each term (min 2.0 GPA required)
• Send a thank-you letter to the donor and a separate thank-you letter to the selection committee for the A. Grace Lee Mims Vocal Scholarship, in care of the Cleveland Foundation, Scholarship Processing, 1422 Euclid Avenue, Suite 1300, Cleveland, Ohio, 44115.
  Renewal: The General Application must be submitted each year for consideration of this award. Students can be awarded each year for up to a maximum of 2 total years of support.

Ohio provides financial aid and other resources for students who are active servic emembers, veterans, and sometimes their family members as well.

• It also helps connect students with financial aid resources through the Federal GI Bill or state-based initiatives like the Ohio College Opportunity Grant.

Montgomery GI Bill and Post 9/11 GI Bill:
The Montgomery GI Bill and Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits are available for service members and veterans to help with education and training costs. The GI Bill provides up to $1,426 per month for 36 academic months (8 semesters) or a total of more than $51,000. The GI Bill can be used for college, business technical or vocational courses; distance learning and correspondence courses; apprenticeship and job training; flight training; and licensing and certification exams. There are some differences in eligibility and benefits between the two GI Bills, so please compare carefully before choosing one program or the other.

ROTC Stipend:
ROTC is an elective curriculum you take along with your required college classes. It prepares you with the tools, training and experiences that will help you succeed in any competitive environment. Along with great leadership training, ROTC can pay for your college tuition, too. Sophomore cadets receive a $350 monthly stipend that increases to $450 for juniors and $500 for seniors.

Student Loan Repayment Plan:
This enlistment incentive can be used to pay off up to $50,000 in existing student debt. Applicants must score 50 or better on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) which is part of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to qualify. Be sure to inquire with your recruiting office for more information.

Educator License Fees Eliminated:
The Ohio Department of Education is eliminating fees for educator license to recognize the contributions of military families.

College Credit for Military Training and Experience:
Before taking college courses, be sure to take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. Ohio’s Public Institutions are committed to the acceptance and awarding of college credit for CLEP and for training or experience in the United States Armed Forces or National Guard.

• Northwest Emergency Team Fund Scholarship:
  This Scholarship is for children of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics (first responders) in the cities of Bay Village, North Olmsted, Westlake, Lakewood, Rocky River, and Fairview Park. Applicants must be pursuing vocational or technical training or an undergraduate college degree at an accredited, Pell-eligible educational institution.Scholarship awards are made on an evaluation of the student’s financial needs, academic achievement, involvement in school and community activities, and work experience. The Northwest Emergency Team Fund of the Cleveland Foundation provides scholarships and financial assistance to graduating and graduated students pursuing four-year baccalaureate or two-year associate degrees at institutions of higher learning, or vocational training leading to certification. The scholarship or financial assistance given shall be restricted to full-time students who are children of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics in the cities of Bay Village, North Olmsted, Westlake, Lakewood, Rocky River, and Fairview Park.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants are limited to graduating and graduated children of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics (first responders) in the cities of Bay Village, North Olmsted, Westlake, Lakewood, Rocky River, and Fairview Park, who plan to attend an accredited college, university, or vocational school on a full-time basis.
