• Lee Jackson Foundation Scholarship

Scholarships are given for outstanding, original, analytical essays on any aspect—positive or negative—of the career, character, or legacy of General Robert E. Lee and/or General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Essays are judged with emphasis on historical accuracy, quality of research, and clarity of written expression.

8 scholarships will be awarded to V irginia high school juniors and seniors submitting outstanding analytical essays on any aspect–positive or negative–of the career, character, or legacy of General Robert E. Lee and/or General “Stonewall” Jackson.

The Foundation will award one $2,000 scholarship and one $1,000 scholarship to students whose essays are judged to be the best in each of Virginia’s eight public high school regions.

In addition, the Foundation will award one $2,000 scholarship and one $1,000 scholarship to private school or homeschooled students whose essays are judged to be the best from this sector.

An additional award of $8,000 will go to the public school, private school, or homeschooled student who authors the essay judged to be the best in the state.

A $1,000 award will be given to a school in each of the nine judging sectors in the name of the high school teacher or advisor who sponsors the most participating students in that sector.

Elegibility requirements:

• Any junior or senior in a Virginia public or private high school or home school may apply
• The student should not have received a Lee-Jackson scholarship in the past
• must be a resident of Virginia who plans to attend an accredited four-year college or university in the United States as a full-time student.
• Students who intend to enroll in a community college must plan to enroll in the college transfer program of the community college.
• The student should demonstrate the natural ability to succeed in college and have a sincere desire to attend.
• Financial need is not a requirement.

• GRANVILLE P. MEADE SCHOLARSHIP

The Granville P. Meade Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. The Granville P. Meade fund provides scholarship awards to worthy and financially disadvantaged Virginia high school seniors to attend one of Virginia’s public or private colleges or universities.

The Department will award four-year scholarships to qualifying students so they are able to continue their college education in subsequent years, on condition that they remain enrolled in a Virginia college or university and
maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA for each semester.

In the past year, each scholarship was in the amount of $2,000 per year for four years, provided the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements.

Elegibility requirements:

Granville P. Meade scholars will be selected based upon financial need and merit. Therefore, applicants will need to demonstrate academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and good character as determined by letters of recommendation and financial need.

• Virginia Commonwealth Award

The Virginia Commonwealth Award helps undergraduate students with financial need and graduate students to pay part of their college costs. The awards are appropriated directly to each state-supported institution. Funds may be used for need-based grants to Virginia resident undergraduates or for grants or assistantships to graduate students (both in-state and out-of-state).

This program does not have a separate application; students must complete the FAFSA to be considered. The application and awarding processes are administered by the financial aid office at each Virginia public college or university.

Elegibility requirements:

• Be admitted into a Virginia public two or four year college or university;
• Be enrolled at least half-time in an approved degree, certificate, or diploma program;
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;
• Be a domiciliary resident of Virginia as defined by the Code of Virginia § 23.1-502; and
• Demonstrate financial need as determined by the institution.

Graduate Student Elegibility requirements:

• Be enrolled full-time in an approved graduate degree program at a participating public Virginia college or university
• Meet requirements established by the granting institution.

To continue these awards (renewal):

• Maintains satisfactory academic progress;
  Continues to meet all of the requirements of the Virginia Student Financial Aid Program regulations;
• If a graduate student, meets the eligibility requirements for graduate students established by the granting institution.
