Overview of select Scholarships available in Massachusetts

• Agnes M. Lindsay Scholarship Program

The Agnes M. Lindsay Scholarship provides scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need who are from rural areas of Massachusetts and attend public institutions of higher education within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Eligibility Checklist:
A student qualifies if they are enrolled in an eligible program and meet the following requirements:

• Be a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts for at least one year prior to the opening of the academic year.
• Be a U.S. Citizen or non-citizen eligible under Title IV regulations.
• Have applied for financial aid, using the standard Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
• Be in compliance with Selective Service Registration.
• Not be in default of any federal or state Student Loans for attendance at any institution or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received.
• Be enrolled full time (at least 12 credits or its equivalent) in a certificate, associate’s or bachelor’s degree program at an eligible institution.
• Not have received a prior bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
• Be maintaining satisfactory academic progress in accordance with institutional and federal standards.
• Demonstrate financial aid need as determined by the federal methodology need analysis criteria.
• Be a permanent resident of a Massachusetts “rural” area.*
  *Rural area shall be defined as an area which is outside an urban area and has fewer than 15,000 inhabitants.

• Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program

The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program was established in 1972 by the Massachusetts State Legislature to recruit students in the 10th and 11th grades whose socio-economic backgrounds and environmental conditions may inhibit their ability to attain educational goals. The students that are selected for this program must have overcome major adversity in their lives (i.e. physical or mental abuse, catastrophic illness, etc.). Obstacles may be mental, physical, geographic or societal.

Massachusetts students who demonstrate academic promise and desire to attend post-secondary institutions may receive up to 50% of their calculated need at the college of their choice within the continental United States.

Eligibility Checklist:
To be eligible for a Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship, a student must:

• Be a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts.
• Be a U.S. Citizen or non-citizen eligible under Title IV regulations.
• Be in compliance with Selective Service Registration.
• Not be in default of any federal or state Student Loans for attendance at any institution or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received.
• Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Exhibit difficult personal circumstances, high financial need, and strong academic promise to continue education beyond the secondary level.
• Be enrolled in a public or private secondary school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

• Early Childhood Educators Scholarship Program

The Early Childhood Educators Scholarship Program was funded as a pilot initiative by the Legislature for the purpose of increasing the quality and availability of teachers and care providers to work with young children and youth in inclusive settings including infant/toddler, preschool and school age programs. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance for currently employed early childhood and out of school time educators and providers who enroll in an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Early Childhood Education or related programs.

Eligibility Checklist:
To be eligible for the Early Childhood Educators Scholarship, an applicant must:

• Be a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts.
• Be a U.S. Citizen or non-citizen eligible under Title IV regulations.
• Have applied for financial aid, using the standard Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
• Be in compliance with Selective Service Registration.
• Not be in default of any federal or state Student Loans for attendance at any institution or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received.
• Enroll, as a matriculated student, in an undergraduate degree program (full or part-time) in Early Childhood
• Education, or a related field (i.e., elementary education, sociology, psychology).
• Be employed, for at least one year, as an educator or provider in an early education and care program or out of school time program that is licensed or authorized by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and continue employment in this field while pursuing the approved course of study.
• Sign an agreement to continue employment as an early childhood educator or provider in Massachusetts upon completing the degree requirement, or repay funds as defined.
• Not have received a prior bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

Award Amounts
The scholarship under this program is based on a per credit rate, depending on the type of institution as provided below. Applicants may receive scholarships to assist with the cost of no more than three courses per semester during the traditional fall, spring and summer:

• State University $400 per credit, maximum of $3,600 per semester
