Majoring in Political Science

Political theory is a sociology discipline that manages the frameworks of government and the examination of political movements and political behavior. Political science is methodologically diverse and appropriates numerous strategies starting in social research.

Approaches include positivism, interpretivism, rational choice theory, behavioralism, structuralism, post-structuralism, realism, institutionalism, and pluralism. Political science, as one of the social sciences, uses methods and techniques that relate to the kinds of inquiries sought: primary sources such as historical documents and official records, secondary sources such as scholarly journal articles, survey research, statistical analysis, case studies, experimental research and model building.

If you choose to be a political science major, you will hone your writing, communications, analytical and computer skills which are the primary parts of a liberal arts education.  Also, majoring in political science can qualify you for many different careers in private for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as public sector jobs.

Most students who have earned a degree in political science very often pursue careers in business, law, consulting, state, local, and federal government, journalism and communications, international organization, finance, polling and campaign management, community service and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), pre-college and college teaching.

Political science education also provides valuable preparation for participating in community organizations, electoral politics, movements on behalf of specific social or financial policies, and for seeking elective or administrative positions in government. While many of these are voluntary activities, participation in them develops skills and creates opportunities for career success.

Political science majors also learn to investigate the history and development of government rule. Students compare and contrast the types of political organizations that have ruled over the most prominent world cultures. By understanding the evolution of our current form of democracy, political science majors can integrate the best practices of the past into new ideas and proposals.  more about political science
